Windows 10 is a series of personal computer operating systems produced by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It is the successor to Windows 8.1 and was released to manufacturing on July 15, 2015, and to retail on July 29, 2015. Windows 10 receives new releases on an ongoing basis, which are available at no additional cost to users. Devices in enterprise environments can receive these updates at a slower pace or benefit from Long-Term Support milestones, which receive only critical updates, such as security patches, over the course of the ten-year extended support period.
One of the most notable features of Windows 10 is its support for Universal Apps, an evolution of the Metro-style apps first introduced in Windows 8. Universal Apps can be designed to run across multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical codebases—including desktops, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface Hub, and mixed reality. The Windows user interface has been redesigned to support transitions between a mouse-centric interface and a touch-optimized interface based on available input devices—especially on 2-in-1 desktops. Both interfaces feature an updated Start menu that incorporates elements of the traditional Windows 7 Start menu with Windows 8 tiles. Windows 10 also introduced the Microsoft Edge web browser, a virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View, support for fingerprint and facial recognition sign-in, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12.
With the LTSC servicing model, customers can delay receiving feature updates and instead receive only monthly quality updates on their devices. Windows 10 features that can be updated with new features, including Cortana, Edge, and all of the included universal Windows apps, are also not included. Feature updates are offered in new LTSC releases every 2-3 years instead of every 6 months, and organizations can choose to install them as in-place updates or even skip releases. Microsoft is committed to delivering bug fixes and security patches for each LTSC release during the extended LTSC service lifecycle. Always check the individual LTSC release to verify its lifecycle.
