Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson previously starred together in See How They Run (2022)
Chronology
It follows the stories of a group of Londoners during the events of the bombing of the British capital in World War II.. London Film Festival last night for the premiere of Steve McQueen’s new film, Blitz. Simply remarkable.
Better than playing the piano, loving grandfather
Young Elliott Heffernan giving a monumentally assured and sincere performance, Sairse Ronan as great as ever and an ensemble cast of much-loved British actors Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, Benjamin Clementine and possibly my favorite piece of the cast from left from recent history with Paul. And a Hans Zimmer score, with his absolute mastery of letting you know something is about to happen, but you’re never quite sure what. The film can feel big and epic at times and yet completely localized and intimate at others as you move from burning London areas to intimate London street scenes, front rooms and lots of small shops and businesses.
An ever-timely reminder that those who divide society destroy society
You don’t see or hear the enemy, only the bombs and the air raid sirens that warn of them. Full of fear and hope, singing underground to keep spirits up, brotherhood in the bomb factory, selfless characters looking out for those they don’t know (take tissues). The diversity of the film reflects what London was like in 1940 and you’ve never seen it like this on film before.
I can’t wait to see it again
Best seen on a big screen with big sound. I hope he gets what he deserves come awards season, directorial achievement #2 for SMQ a definite possibility. See the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
